PGWP to PR: Complete Express Entry Guide for Nepali Graduates
From PGWP to PR: The Journey
You have completed your program, received your PGWP, and started working in Canada. Now the question is: how do you convert this into permanent residency? This guide covers every step.
Step 1: Understand Express Entry
Express Entry is Canada's primary immigration pathway for skilled workers. It manages three programs: Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades (FST). For international graduates with Canadian work experience, CEC is the most relevant.
Step 2: Qualify for Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
CEC requirements: At least 1 year (1,560 hours) of skilled Canadian work experience in the past 3 years, in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation. Your work must be paid (volunteer does not count). You must meet CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0 in all bands) for NOC TEER 0/1 roles or CLB 5 for TEER 2/3 roles.
Step 3: Maximize Your CRS Score
The Comprehensive Ranking System scores your profile out of 1,200 points:
- Core factors (max 600): Age, education, language proficiency, Canadian work experience
- Additional factors (max 600): Provincial nomination (600 points!), Canadian education (15-30 points), sibling in Canada, French proficiency
Typical Nepali graduate CRS score:
- Age 25-29: 110 points
- Canadian diploma (2 years): 98 points + Canadian education bonus 15 points
- IELTS 7.0 all bands (CLB 9): 124 points
- 1 year Canadian experience: 40 points
- Skill transferability: 50 points
- Total: approximately 437-487 points
Step 4: Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)
A PNP nomination adds 600 CRS points, guaranteeing a PR invitation. Key PNPs for Nepali graduates:
- Ontario (OINP): Human Capital Priorities Stream (random selection from Express Entry pool). Masters Graduate Stream (Ontario Masters graduates). PhD Graduate Stream.
- BC PNP: Skills Immigration — International Graduate. BC PNP Tech (for tech workers).
- Manitoba (MPNP): Skilled Worker in Manitoba. Very accessible for Manitoba graduates — one of the fastest PNP pathways.
- Alberta (AAIP): Alberta Express Entry Stream. Alberta Opportunity Stream.
Step 5: Apply for PR
When you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), you have 60 days to submit your PR application with: police clearance from Nepal and Canada, medical examination, proof of funds (not required for CEC), all supporting documents. PR processing takes 6-12 months.
Real Timelines from Our Clients
Average timeline from graduation to PR for our clients: 2.5-3 years. Fastest (Manitoba PNP): 18 months from graduation. CEC without PNP: 2-3 years. The key is starting your IELTS improvement and work experience accumulation as soon as you graduate.
