Post-Graduation Work Permit Path

Your complete roadmap from Canadian study to permanent residency

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) pathway is the most popular route to Canadian permanent residency for Nepali students. This program-focused guide covers the entire journey: completing a PGWP-eligible program at a DLI, applying for and receiving your PGWP, building Canadian work experience, and applying for PR through Express Entry. The PGWP gives you an open work permit (any employer, any field) for up to 3 years, and the Canadian work experience you gain is the key ingredient for a competitive Express Entry profile.

Eligibility Requirements

Meeting these requirements strengthens your application. Our counselors can help you identify areas to improve and present the strongest possible profile.

  • Completed a program of at least 8 months at a DLI (2+ years recommended for maximum PGWP)
  • Maintained full-time enrollment status throughout the program
  • Received official notification of program completion (transcript, completion letter)
  • Valid study permit at the time of PGWP application
  • Must apply within 180 days of receiving written confirmation of program completion
  • Must apply before study permit expires

Application Process

We have streamlined the study abroad application process into clear, manageable steps. Our team guides you through each stage to maximize your chances of admission.

1

Complete a PGWP-Eligible Program

Ensure your program is at a DLI and is PGWP-eligible. Programs of 2+ years give you a 3-year PGWP. Programs of 8 months to 2 years give a PGWP equal to program length. We verify PGWP eligibility before you even apply to the institution.

2

Apply for PGWP Within 180 Days

After receiving your official completion letter, apply for your PGWP online through IRCC. You can start working full-time immediately after applying (you receive implied status). The application requires your completion letter, transcripts, passport, and photos.

3

Build Canadian Work Experience

With your PGWP, work in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation to qualify for Express Entry. You need at least 1 year of continuous Canadian work experience for the Canadian Experience Class. We advise on which occupations and NOC codes align with your qualification and PR goals.

4

Create Express Entry Profile

After gaining 1+ year of Canadian work experience, create your Express Entry profile in the IRCC system. Your CRS score is calculated based on age, education, language proficiency, Canadian work experience, and other factors. We help you maximize your CRS score.

5

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Many provinces have PNP streams specifically for international graduates working in the province. Ontario (OINP), BC (BC PNP), Alberta (AAIP), and Manitoba (MPNP) all have graduate streams. A PNP nomination adds 600 CRS points, virtually guaranteeing a PR invitation.

6

Receive PR Invitation & Apply

When your CRS score is competitive (or you receive a PNP nomination), you are invited to apply for PR. You have 60 days to submit a complete application with police clearance, medical exam, and supporting documents. PR processing takes approximately 6-12 months.

Costs & Scholarships

Understanding the financial commitment is crucial for planning your study abroad journey. Here is a breakdown of typical costs and available funding options.

Tuition Range
N/A (PGWP phase)

The PGWP itself costs CAD 255 (application fee). The investment was in your education: college diploma (CAD 24,000-44,000 total) or university degree (CAD 60,000-200,000+ total). The PGWP is your return on that educational investment.

Scholarships
N/A

The PGWP phase is a work phase, not a study phase. Your investment in education pays off through employment. PR application costs approximately CAD 2,150 (principal applicant) plus medical exam, police clearance, and credential assessment fees totaling approximately CAD 3,000-4,000.

Costs are estimates and vary by university and city. Call +977-9849998031 or fill out the form for personalized cost estimates based on your preferred universities.

Student Life

Studying abroad is about more than just academics. Here is what you can expect from life as an international student.

The PGWP phase is your transition from student to working professional in Canada. You have the freedom to work for any employer, in any field, anywhere in Canada. Many graduates start in roles related to their studies and advance quickly. The Canadian job market values both your international perspective and your Canadian credential.

During this phase, you focus on building your career, saving money, and accumulating the Canadian work experience needed for PR. Many Nepali PGWP holders share housing with friends from college, gradually transitioning to independent living as their careers develop.

The Express Entry application process, while complex, is well-documented and transparent. You can track your CRS score, see the cutoff scores for each draw, and make strategic decisions about when and how to apply. Provincial Nominee Programs add another pathway, and each province has specific streams for international graduates. The Nepali community in Canada is a valuable resource during this phase — many have gone through the same process and can offer guidance and referrals.

Post-Graduation Work Permit Path — Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the PGWP?
PGWP duration depends on your program length: Less than 8 months = no PGWP. 8 months to 2 years = PGWP equal to program length. 2 years or more = 3-year PGWP. This is why we strongly recommend 2-year programs — you get the maximum 3-year PGWP, giving you the most time to gain work experience and apply for PR.
Can I change jobs on PGWP?
Yes. The PGWP is an open work permit — you can work for any employer, in any occupation, in any province. You are not tied to a specific employer or job. This gives you the flexibility to find the best career opportunity and move between provinces if better opportunities arise.
What CRS score do I need for PR?
CRS cutoff scores fluctuate. In 2024-2025, CEC draws typically invited candidates with CRS scores of 470-510. A typical Nepali graduate profile: age 25-29 (110 points), Bachelor's + Canadian credential (128 points), IELTS 7.0 (124 points), 1 year Canadian experience (40 points), adaptability factors = approximately 460-500 CRS. A PNP nomination adds 600 points, making it the most reliable pathway.
What are Provincial Nominee Programs and how do they help?
PNPs allow Canadian provinces to nominate immigrants who meet local labor market needs. A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points to your Express Entry profile, virtually guaranteeing a PR invitation. Key PNP streams for Nepali graduates: Ontario (OINP Master's Graduate Stream, Human Capital Priorities), BC (BC PNP Tech, International Graduate), Alberta (AAIP Alberta Express Entry), Manitoba (MPNP Skilled Worker). Each province has different criteria — we help you identify the best PNP for your situation.
How long does the PR process take from start to finish?
Realistic timeline: Complete 2-year program (Month 0) → PGWP approved (Month 1-2) → Start working (Month 2) → Complete 1 year work experience (Month 14) → Submit Express Entry profile (Month 14) → Receive PNP nomination or wait for CEC draw (Month 16-20) → Receive Invitation to Apply for PR (Month 16-22) → Submit PR application (Month 17-23) → PR approved (Month 23-35). Total: approximately 2-3 years after graduation. Some graduates achieve PR faster through PNP.
